What is an Occupational Therapist (OT)?

Occupational Therapists (OT’s) work with clients, as well as their families, to improve the clients' independence in everyday tasks. They support the individual to be able to do the things that they want to do, through the development of skills and the implementation of technology and strategies. OT's do this through:

Assessment - identifying exact areas of concern that impact the client being ability to do what they want

Intervention - plans and support to be able to achieve the goals that the individual wants to

What can an OT work on?

An Occupational Therapist can work across many areas, including a range of diagnoses, for example, autism (ASD), Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Down Syndrome. They work with clients in early childhood through to aged care.

  • Challenging behaviours

  • Fine motor skills

  • Gross motor skills

  • Self-care tasks

  • Feeding

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment and why do I need one?

A Functional Capacity Assessment can be completed by an Occupational Therapist. It assesses how well a person is able to do their every day tasks in their home and in their community. The OT is then able to recommend the amount of support that a client would require in order to improve their outcomes and meet their goals.

Is OT covered in my NDIS Plan?

Check your funding under "Capacity Building" in your NDIS plan to determine if you can access an Occupational Therapist.
